WELCOME TO THE CHRISTMAS MARKETS
many different Christmas markets
Every year the people of Munich and many international tourists look forward to the Advent season with all the many Christmas markets in the city. The central focus is the Christmas market around Marienplatz, which is known far beyond the Isar metropolis. This one is also known as the traditional one. The “original” Christmas market – also the most successful – is the one around Marienplatz. Its highlight is the Krampus run over the Christmas market. It gets scary, but it’s completely harmless. Around 30 groups with around 400 participants march through Munich’s pedestrian zone in the big run. In the small run, on the other hand, there are only 20 Krampus from the first Munich group – the Sparifankerln pass. Almost every other district in Munich has its own Christmas market and its specialty. The Haidhauser Christmas market on Weißenburger Platz is one of the most atmospheric Christmas markets. More than 50 festively decorated huts are set up there. It invites you to meet with friends, eat and drink and enjoy the Advent atmosphere, choose gifts and of course buy them. Of course, artistic performances such as the spectacular Perchten parade, traditional zither music, Christmas choir songs, but also jazz music on the piano should not be missing. In contrast, the Christmas market at Sendlinger Tor is more traditional. The exhibitors and stand suppliers are all from the Munich region. Handicrafts, Christmas decorations, wooden toys, cribs, mulled wine, gingerbread and delicacies from all over the world are on offer there. In recent years, visiting the Neuhauser Christmas market has become a tradition for many. Not only nice things, mulled wine or crêpes are offered there. There is always an extensive program of events for both young and old. Visitors can choose between a puppet theater, a raffle or daily music programs. You have to feel comfortable in this atmosphere and even the biggest Christmas grouch starts to enjoy the time before Christmas. There is also always a Christmas market at the Chinese Tower in the English Garden. There are many tourists here. But you definitely shouldn’t let that put you off. Because there, too, visitors are offered a great deal from decorations and gifts to traditional delicacies and hot drinks.
